Facebook and Instagram retargeting that closes the loop
People rarely buy on the first visit. Retargeting on Facebook and Instagram reminds warm audiences why they were interested, with the right message at the right time.

What is Facebook retargeting?
Facebook retargeting shows ads on Facebook and Instagram to people who have already interacted with your business: visited your website, viewed a product, added to cart, watched your videos, engaged with your page or messaged you. Because they already know you, they are more likely to buy or enquire than people seeing you for the first time.
How does Facebook retargeting work?
The Meta Pixel and Conversions API record visits and actions on your website, where visitors have consented. Meta uses these events to build custom audiences, such as "viewed a product in the last 14 days". You then show those people ads that move them forward. Website custom audiences can include people from up to 180 days back.
Retargeting audiences we build
| Audience | Message that works |
|---|---|
| Viewed product, did not add to cart | The product they viewed, with reviews or benefits |
| Added to cart, did not buy | Reminder, delivery or returns information, sometimes an offer |
| Visited a service page | Proof: results, testimonials, a guarantee |
| Watched most of a video | The next step: a demo, an offer or a lead form |
| Messaged or engaged on Instagram | Answers to common questions and a clear call to action |
| Past customers | New products, refills, upgrades and referrals |
Is retargeting still needed with Advantage+?
Meta's automated campaigns already show ads to warm audiences when they are likely to convert, so separate retargeting campaigns matter less than they used to. We still use dedicated retargeting where the message must differ, such as abandoned carts, long B2B decisions or past customers, and we check that results are not just taking credit for people who would have bought anyway.
Retargeting best practices
- Match the message to the stage: do not repeat the first ad.
- Use time windows: recent visitors get more frequent ads; older visitors get lighter reminders.
- Exclude recent buyers from offers they no longer need.
- Use catalog ads for stores: show the exact products people viewed. See Advantage+ catalog ads.
- Watch frequency so people are not annoyed.
Privacy and tracking
Retargeting depends on accurate, consented tracking. Browser limits reduce Pixel data, which is why we pair it with the Conversions API. For retargeting on Google's channels, see Google Ads remarketing.
Frequently asked questions
What is Facebook retargeting?
Showing Facebook and Instagram ads to people who already visited your website, viewed products, watched your videos, engaged with your page or messaged you.
How does Facebook retargeting work?
The Meta Pixel and Conversions API record website actions, Meta builds custom audiences from them, and you show those people ads that move them to buy or enquire.
How far back can I retarget website visitors?
Website custom audiences can include people from up to 180 days. We set shorter windows for most campaigns, because recent visitors convert best.
Do I still need retargeting with Advantage+ campaigns?
Less than before, because Meta's automation already reaches warm audiences. Dedicated retargeting still helps for abandoned carts, long decisions and past customers.
Is retargeting the same as remarketing?
Yes. Meta and most people say retargeting; Google calls it remarketing.
