How do Instagram ads work?
Instagram ads are bought through Meta Ads Manager, the same tool used for Facebook ads. You choose a goal, budget and audience, upload creative, and select Instagram placements: Feed, Stories, Reels, Explore and search results. Meta's auction then shows your ad to the people most likely to take the action you chose.
Instagram ad formats and placements
| Placement | Format | Tips |
|---|---|---|
| Reels | Vertical video, 9:16 | Native, creator-style video with a strong first second |
| Stories | Vertical image or video, 9:16 | Keep text away from the top and bottom edges |
| Feed | Image, video or carousel, 4:5 or 1:1 | Clear product or offer, readable on a small screen |
| Explore | Image or video | Reach people discovering new content |
How much do Instagram ads cost?
There are no fixed Instagram advertising rates. You set the budget and pay as ads are shown or clicked, through Meta's auction. Cost per result depends on your audience, country, season, creative and offer. Reels and Stories can be cost-effective when the creative is made for them. We set budgets from your target cost per lead or sale.
How to run ads on Instagram
- Connect your Instagram professional account to your Meta Business Manager.
- Install the Meta Pixel and Conversions API on your website.
- Create a campaign in Ads Manager with a sales or leads objective.
- Choose Advantage+ placements, or select Instagram placements if you have a reason to.
- Upload vertical and 4:5 versions of your creative.
- Launch, let the ad set learn, then keep what wins and refresh what fades.
How to create Instagram Stories ads that work
- Hook in the first second: movement, a face, a bold claim or a question.
- Use sound and captions; many people watch with sound off.
- Keep key text in the centre, away from the profile bar and the call-to-action button.
- Show the product in use, not just on a white background.
- End with one clear next step.
Instagram or Facebook?
Most campaigns run on both, because Meta's AI shifts budget to wherever results are cheapest. Instagram leans younger and more visual; Facebook reaches a broader age range and works well for lead forms. We check results by placement and adjust creative rather than splitting budgets manually.

Frequently asked questions
How much do Instagram ads cost?
There are no fixed rates. You set the budget and pay through Meta's auction; cost per result depends on audience, country, season, creative and offer.
How do I run ads on Instagram?
Through Meta Ads Manager: connect your Instagram account, install the Pixel and Conversions API, create a sales or leads campaign, add Instagram placements and upload vertical creative.
Do I need a separate budget for Instagram and Facebook?
Usually not. Running both with Advantage+ placements lets Meta move budget to the cheapest results. We review results by placement.
What size should Instagram ads be?
Vertical 9:16 for Reels and Stories, and 4:5 or 1:1 for the feed. We make versions for each.
Do Instagram ads work for B2B?
They can, especially for brand awareness and retargeting, but Facebook lead forms and Google Search usually bring more B2B leads.
