What is conversion tracking in Google Ads?
Conversion tracking records the actions you want from your ads, such as purchases, form submissions, calls and sign-ups, and links each one to the ad, keyword and campaign that brought the visitor. It tells you what your ads actually return, and it is the data smart bidding uses to decide what to bid.
Can you run Google Ads without conversion tracking?
You can, but you should not. Without conversions, you cannot tell which keywords bring customers, and Google's bidding can only optimise for clicks. That usually means paying for traffic that does not buy.
How to set up conversion tracking in Google Ads
- Decide what counts: the real business results, such as a purchase, qualified lead or booked call.
- Create conversion actions in Google Ads (Goals, then Conversions), with values where possible.
- Install the tag: the Google tag directly, or through Google Tag Manager, which is easier to maintain.
- Fire it on the right event: a thank-you page, a successful form submission or a completed purchase.
- Turn on enhanced conversions to improve accuracy.
- Set primary and secondary goals so bidding uses only the actions that matter.
- Test it before you spend.
Google Ads conversion tracking best practices
- Bid on real outcomes, not micro-actions such as page views or button clicks.
- Count leads once per click ("one") and purchases every time ("every").
- Pass dynamic order values for ecommerce.
- Track calls and WhatsApp clicks as well as forms.
- Import offline conversions for lead businesses.
- Keep one source of truth for each action to avoid double counting between GA4 imports and the Google Ads tag.
How to test Google Ads conversion tracking
Use Google Tag Assistant to preview your site and confirm the conversion tag fires once, on the right event, with the right value. Then submit a real test lead or order. In Google Ads, the conversion action status should show "Recording conversions" within a day or so.
Tracking conversions on a different domain
If your checkout or booking form is on another domain, such as a booking platform or payment page, the click identifier can be lost on the way. The fix is to install the Google tag and conversion linker on both domains and set up cross-domain measurement, or to track the conversion server-side or through offline import. We set this up so conversions on the second domain are still credited to the right ad.
Enhanced conversions
Enhanced conversions send hashed first-party data, such as an email address entered in a form, to help Google match conversions to ad clicks when cookies are limited. It improves measurement accuracy and is set up with consent in mind.
Offline conversion import
For lead businesses, the real result happens after the form: a qualified call or a closed deal. Importing these from your CRM lets Google optimise for leads that become customers.
Shopify and WooCommerce
Store platforms have their own Google integrations, but they often double count, miss values or conflict with older tags. We check what is installed, keep one clean setup and confirm purchases match your orders.
Consent mode and tracking without cookies
Where your markets require consent, we set up Google consent mode so tags respect visitors' choices. When people decline cookies, consent mode lets Google model conversions instead of losing them entirely, and enhanced conversions and offline imports fill more of the gap.
